Web Application Hosting

Description

Web Application Hosting provides 24x7 service, hardware and software for the delivery of Web-based (browser-based) applications.   The application is deployed to one central location and is accessible via a Web browser, eliminating the need to deploy code to individual workstations.   Nebraska Directory Services is utilized for end user authentication.    Web Application Hosting provides secure hosting facilities, an Uninterruptible Power Supply, 24X7 systems and hardware support, routine full system backups for both database and application servers.  The service also provides isolated development, client acceptance, and production hosting environments which allows for testing of data and business functions without impacting production data and response times.

Business Value

Customers realize cost and personnel savings by allowing their staff to focus on core business instead of security, hardware and software support, and software distribution.

Customer Profile

State agencies, boards, and commissions; political subdivisions (e.g., cities, counties, community colleges and school districts); and federal agencies—especially those desiring to get out of the hosting business.

Glossary/Expanded Explanations

Complexity - Office of the CIO Web hosting includes acquisition and maintenance of server equipment, upgrades, bandwidth, technical support resources, security, backups, and other services. We monitor the servers and network infrastructure to deliver optimal performance.

Different levels of Internet application complexity require different levels of skill and effort to maintain a high quality of hosting service. A variety of factors contribute to this complexity. So, while working with you to gather and fine-tune the functional requirements of your Internet application, we will also work to determine your application’s operational needs. Our findings are then used to help determine the overall cost of hosting your application.

Hit - The Office of the CIO currently uses an approach for cost recovery whereby, in addition to a flat monthly rate (based upon complexity factors),  Application Hosting customers are charged a usage fee based upon the volume of "hits" generated by a given Internet Application.  A "hit" can be thought of as a request for a resource and the subsequent response (for example: calculations, queries, reports, images, buttons, data, and content in general).  Usage fees are categorized into five distinct tiers, based upon usage ranges, in which the per hit rate decreases as the number of generated hits increases, thereby allowing for both high-volume and low-volume applications within the same cost recovery mechanism.
