Voice and Data Cabling

Description

This service involves the installation of voice and data cabling. Installed media includes: inside horizontal copper station cabling; inside copper and fiber riser cable; inside intra-closet copper and fiber cable; and intra-building outside copper and fiber cabling plant for state-owned campus facilities.

Business Value

When the installation of cabling is performed by the Field Services Unit, agencies are provided a best-cost solution through government-account pricing and lower labor rates.
For projects that are contracted to private companies, our tight bid specifications, knowledge, and experience assures the agencies receive the best cost estimates in this highly competitive market.

Customer Profile

These services are available to all State agencies, boards, and commissions whether located in state owned or leased facilities. For agencies located in non-state owned facilities, Field Services will work with the building owner to assure the agency receives the proper media to support their needs.

Service Cost

Depending on the nature of the project, the Field Services Unit can provide costs based on:

  • Total project cost. This is typically used for fixed-result projects, like the installation of campus cabling where copper and fiber cable counts are known.
  • Cost per unit. This is typically used for inside station outlets, where the location and number of outlets are subject to change during the course of the project.
  • Time and material. This is typically used for small projects where the exact nature of the project is unknown, like the physical make-up of the building, etc.

Major Cost Drivers/Cost-Saving Tips

Every building is different. The type of construction and methods used during the building process offers the installer a variety of challenges which can affect the cost of the cabling system installed. These include: number of existing wiring closets; number of new wiring closets needed; type of building construction (wood-frame, concrete block, etc.); type of air handling system (some installations require the use of fire-rated cable); number of fire-rated walls requiring penetration; number of outlet locations needed; distance from outlet locations to wiring closets; distances between wiring closets and/or buildings; cable pathways, etc.
